Promise at Dawn
A romantic, thrilling memoir that has become a French classic. Promise at Dawn by Romain Gary (1914-80), a classic of modern French literature, has all the earmarks of a richly romantic novel. It is all the more thrilling, therefore, to read it and know that this is not fiction but a real-life story. As a young child, Romain Gary’s mother told him that a day would come when he would have to challenge and conquer the evil demons of submission and defeat. After all, he was to be a French military hero, ambassador, noted writer, and ladies’ man . . . . Thus anticipating battle, by the time of his death he had won the Cross of the Liberation, the Croix de Guerre, the Legion of Honor, the Prix Goncourt (the last rather a comedown, as his mother had mentioned the Nobel Prize); and he had been the French consul-general in Los Angeles. Promise at Dawn begins as the story of a mother’s sacrifice. Alone and poor she fights fiercely to give her son the very best. Gary chronicles his childhood with her in Russia, Poland, and on the French Riveria. And he recounts his adventurous life as a young man fighting for France in World War II. But above all he tells the story of the love for his mother that was his very life, their secret and private planet, their wonderland "born out of a mother’s murmur into a child’s ear, a promise whispered at dawn of future triumphs and greatness, of justice and love."
Adapting Legal Cultures
Looking at the theory and practice of legal borrowing and adaptation in different areas of the world, this volume discusses legal transplants, the role of the state in producing socio-legal change and the effects of globalization.
Carriage of Goods by Sea Land and Air
Written by a combination of top academics, industry experts and leading practitioners, this book offers a detailed insight into both unimodal and multimodal carriage of goods. It provides a comprehensive and thoroughly practical guide to the issues that matter today on what is a very complex area of law. From the papers delivered at the 8th International Colloquium organised by Swansea Law School's prestigious Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law, this original work considers current opinions, trends and issues arising from contracts of carriage of goods by sea, land, air, and multi-modal combinations of these, not to mention the legal position of vital participants such as freight forwarders, terminal operators and cargo insurers. The topics under discussion range through issues such as paperwork, piracy, liability for defective containers, damage in transit, the CMR Convention, and the possible effects of the Rotterdam Rules. An indispensable resource for transport lawyers, industry professionals, academics and post-graduate students of maritime law.
The Legal Profession in the European Union
This work makes a survey on the evolution of EC law focusing on legal profession and their relationships with the market freedoms and competition rules. It starts from the Treaty provisions on free movement of services and freedom of establishment to further analyse the directive created to regulate the provision of services by lawyers (77/249), the diploma recognition system (89/48 and the new directive 2005/36) and the establishment directive (98/5) on the right to practise in another Member State on a permanent basis, using the professional title gained in the home Member State and the possible integration in the host State.
The End of Lawyers
This widely acclaimed legal bestseller has ignited an intense debate within the legal profession. It examines the effect of advances in IT upon legal practice, analysing anticipated developments in the next decade. It urges lawyers to consider the sustainability of their traditional role.
